Create a blog filter in 30 seconds on Squarespace [Easy archive block trick]

Squarespace is a great choice for blogging. The platform offers great blogging functionality and there’s the chance for pretty in-depth customisation too.

One thing Squarespace’s blog capabilities are missing however is the option to filter your blog content. Whilst there are an array of plugins available that do this and do it well, there’s no obvious way to do this on Squarespace.

A filter is arguably an important part of any online blog, allowing you to sort your content via tags, topics, date posted etc.

The good news however is that there IS a way to add a filter to your Squarespace blog without needing to use a plugin and the best part? You can do it in just 30 seconds!

How to create a blog filter on Squarespace

Firstly head to your blog page and select edit.

You need to make sure you’re editing the main blog page and what you need to do is add a blank section at the top of your page.

Within this new section you need to add an Archive block. Within the editing panel for this archive block, you need to select the blog within the content panel before switching to the display panel.

Firstly head to your blog page and select edit.

Within the display panel, change your layout to a dropdown and edit the title to “filter”. You can then choose what you want to filter your content by such as title, category or date.

You can then play around with the size of your archive block and where it’s displayed on your blog page. I recommend adding a search block next to it, to further enhance the user experience and navigation of your blog.

Hit save and that’s it. See, I told you it would take just 30 seconds!

It’s super simple but until Squarespace adds a native filter functionality, it’s the easiest way of allowing users to filter your blog content to find what they’re looking for.
