How to display a Squarespace pop-up on desktop only

Pop-ups are a tricky website feature. Get them right and they can be a great lead magnet, giving you access to valuable customer data. Get them wrong however and they can make your website look spammy and unprofessional.

Whilst they often work well on desktop, pop-ups and mobile websites are definitely not a match made in heaven. Users are already navigating your website on a small screen, they don’t need a pop-up appearing that fills the page and blocks the content they’re looking for.

As a Squarespace designer, I usually follow a simple rule for pop-ups. I enable them on desktop and disable them on mobile. This means I don’t have to sacrifice collecting data and the benefits pop-ups can bring but I also don’t need to worry about the mobile version of my website being off-putting to users.

So with that in mind, let’s take a look at how to enable pop-ups on desktop only on Squarespace.

Firstly, to enable a pop-up you’ll need to navigate to marketing > promotional pop-up in your Squarespace dashboard. Here you can customise your pop-up, editing the text, the CTA and your storage choice for the user data it collects.

To disable the pop-up on mobile devices, but keep it for desktop users, you need to click on display and timing within the pop-up section and un-toggle “show on mobile” before clicking save.

It really is that simple. It’s a 10-second task that requires a couple of button clicks.

Like I said, pop-ups can provide brilliant value and I use one on the desktop version of this very website. But if, like me, you think they ruin the appearance and experience of mobile websites, this simple hack allows you to enable pop-ups on desktop only with no code required.
