Squarespace new video blocks update. What are they and how can you use them?
Squarespace seems to have a new obsession. Videos.
The platform has been on a roll lately with launching new updates centred around videos.
First we had the new video storage update that allows users to upload and store up to 30 minutes of videos on Squarespace itself (so no need for an external host such as YouTube or Vimeo).
Then the platform launched video blocks, meaning videos no longer have to be displayed in the background of sections.
The video block update is one of my favourites and it’s totally transformed how we can add and utilise videos on Squarespace websites. Let’s take a look at it in more detail…
Squarespace video blocks
You add a video block to your Squarespace website in the same way you add any other type of block to your site section.
Once you’ve added the block you simply double click on it and you can upload your video content. Like I mentioned before, previously you had to add your video via a link to another video host but not anymore. Providing your video is 30 minutes or under, you can upload it directly to Squarespace.
You can add longer videos, you’ll just need to pay for more storage.

Once your video is uploaded, Squarespace now offers you tons more editing features. You can now set your video to autoplay, you can mute it and you can put it on a loop so that it plays over and over again for users.
A great new feature is the ability to take away player controls. If you want your website visitors to be able to play and pause your video or make it full screen etc then you can keep these on. Sometimes however you don’t want that. If so, simply turn off player controls within your video block edit panel.
You can also set the video to allow minimal player controls, meaning users can play and pause your video but that’s it.

These different features are super useful for Squarespace designers who are often faced with specific client requests. Now that Squarespace offers such extensive video block editing, you can ensure that videos display and function on a website exactly how you/your client wants them to.
The video block update is a really great Squarespace rollout and I’d recommend keeping your eyes peeled for the platform's next video focus.
