How to use Squarespace contact forms

Squarespace contact forms are an essential but often overlooked feature of many websites.

From order forms to newsletter sign ups, there are various ways you can use Squarespace forms, many of which you may not have thought about before.

Let’s take a look at how to use Squarespace forms properly in order to get the most out of them.

Setting up a Squarespace form

When you’re adding any form to your Squarespace site, always remember to check you’ve added your email address to the storage section. This is where all of the answers to your form will be sent.

You also need to give your contact form a name. My top tip for this is to name them as the page on which the form is found. As you can have multiple different forms on your website, names such as “home page contact form” or “contact page form” allow you to keep track of which pages are prompting the most form sign-ups.

Customising your Squarespace contact form

Squarespace offers you the chance to customise the button of your contact form too. You might opt for “submit”, “complete form” or “finish”.

One of the most important things to remember when customising your contact form is to edit the post-submit section. Here you can add a message to send to users once they have submitted their form or you can even redirect them to a new page.

You can also change the form fields that you want to include. Within the content panel you can select “edit form fields” and here you can delete fields, add in your own as well as moving the order of the fields around. You can also make certain fields required, by selecting the required toggle, and leave others as optional.

When it comes to adding new sections to your contact form, the options are endless. You can add small and large text sections to give users the chance to explain how you can help, checkboxes and surveys to help categorise user requests and drop-down menu options for users to choose from.

You can also ask for more user data such as their phone number, Twitter handle, preferred currency and their address.

A really handy feature of Squarespace contact forms is being able to add in lines. Lines allow you to break up your forms into sections, particularly useful if your forms are lengthy and you want to retrieve a considerable amount of information from users.

All of these options are available to select in the edit form fields panel.

As you can see, the vast customisation options available on Squarespace contact forms enables you to use them for almost anything. From more traditional email sign-ups through to job applications and order forms, the potential is endless.

What seems like a simple addition to a webpage can in fact totally transform the user experience and data collection of your website.
