How to fix spacing issues on Squarespace Fluid Engine

One of my Six-figure Design Club students asked me last week about why his Squarespace Fluid Engine designs had crazy spacing issues. We ended up going through things for about 20 minutes, fixing his issues. It was then that he said I had to make a video to help other people with this issue.

So that’s exactly what I did.

How to fix spacing issues on Squarespace Fluid Engine

Squarespace’s Classic Editor is great, but Fluid Engine really kicks it up a notch.

The only problem is, we can get huge spacing issues.

Not ideal.

Picture this: your text block and button block have awkward gaps that only seem to grow as you expand screen sizes. So what do we do? Read on.

The Simple Solution: Shrinking Text Blocks

The key to achieving harmonious spacing lies in resizing your elements manually. Here's the game plan: reduce the text block size by clicking it once and then resizing it to its minimum. This tightens up the space considerably.

What you’ll then need to do is align the buttons around the box to bring it all back into alignment. Aligning your text and button perfectly is the secret sauce to seamless fluid spacing. Here's how to do it:

  • Click on the text block.

  • Click on the button block.

  • Press "G" to activate the grid view.

The goal is to ensure an equal number of grid lines above and below your elements. If they don't match up, adjust accordingly. This ensures consistency and symmetry in your design.

And it doesn’t just have to be the examples I just listed. You can do this with any block on your Fluid Engine section that has a ridiculous amount of extra padding.

Symmetry on Mobile: Perfecting Every Viewport

You’ll then want to ensure that the spacing is sorted on mobile too.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Click on the mobile icon in the top right of your editor window.

  • Adjust images and buttons to achieve consistent spacing.

  • Or if you use other blocks, adjust this too.

  • Ensure that top and bottom elements touch the grid's edges (if you’re using ‘fill screen’ section type).

Your Squarespace site is now a work of art, with fluid spacing that radiates professionalism.

Remember, balanced spacing contributes to a polished user experience that boosts engagement and conversions.
