Squarespace Just Launched Dropdown Icons! What Does This Mean for Your Site's Navigation?

If you’ve ever been frustrated trying to add icons next to dropdown folders in your Squarespace navigation, you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. I even made a YouTube tutorial on how to code custom icons for dropdown folders because, until recently, Squarespace didn’t offer a built-in solution.

Thankfully, Squarespace has finally solved this.

Now you can easily add dropdown icons to your folders, without custom code, and it’s a much-needed update. Before, there was no visual difference between a regular navigation link and a dropdown folder.

This made user navigation confusing because you couldn’t easily tell which menu items expanded.

Let’s walk through how to add dropdown icons in just a few clicks.

Step 1: Add a Dropdown Folder

  • Go to Pages in your Squarespace dashboard.

  • Add a Dropdown Folder.

  • Give the folder a name (e.g. "Example").

You don’t need to change anything inside the folder at this stage.

Step 2: Edit the Header

  • Click Edit on your site.

  • Select Edit Site Header.

  • Go to Navigation.

  • Click on Design.

Step 3: Choose a Dropdown Icon

  • In the navigation design settings, you’ll now see a new option called Dropdown Icon.

  • By default, no icon is selected.

  • Browse the selection, you’ll find arrows, triangles, circles, squares, and more.

  • Pick the icon style you like. (A simple down arrow works great for most sites.)

  • Click Save.

Step 4: Test the Dropdown

  • Add a few pages inside your folder to see how the dropdown works.

  • Hover over the folder and watch the dropdown icon respond, there’s now a clear visual cue that items are nested inside.

Why This Update Matters

Before this feature, the only way to add dropdown indicators in Squarespace was to:

  • Write custom code

  • Inject icons manually

  • Hack together design workarounds

Now, Squarespace’s native dropdown icon option makes navigation more intuitive. Visitors can instantly see which menu items expand, making your site easier to use and more visually organized.

It’s great to see Squarespace rolling out simple but meaningful features like this. Adding dropdown icons should’ve been standard from the start, but I’m glad it’s here now.
