Squarespace has made significant strides in implementing AI to streamline website creation. At their annual Squarespace Circle Day, the company showcased their new AI builder. Naturally, I was curious to see if I could fully create a website using AI. While it's not about to take my job as a web design specialist, it’s an incredible tool for beginners seeking a customized website quickly and efficiently.

Step 1: Create Your Brief

Start by generating a brief. I used ChatGPT to create a web design brief for a real estate agency, focusing on sophistication and targeting high-net-worth individuals with interests in luxury properties.

Step 2: Input Your Details

Head to Squarespace and select 'Get Started'. You'll be prompted to sign up and choose a template or opt to build with AI. Select the build with AI option and you’ll be asked input your prompts such as your website name, brand personality and website scope.

Step 3: Customize Your Website

After setting up the basic structure, use AI to generate text based on your chosen narrative style (e.g. sophisticated). Design your homepage by selecting sections like intro and featured properties, ensuring they reflect the luxurious feel outlined in your brief.

Once your base is established, you can delve deeper into customization. Deciding fonts, colors, and layouts are crucial steps in aligning with the initial brief. While AI provides a good start, human insight ensures the details resonate with your target audience.

Step 4: Using AI for Content Creation

Squarespace's AI can also aid in content creation, such as generating blog posts. Though it doesn’t replace a human touch, the AI provides a foundation you can refine. Add prompts that include your blog post title and any keywords you want to target.

Step 5: Adding a Personal Touch

Go back over your site to see where you can enhance features and pages. Include unique elements to stand out: overlapping visuals, social proof through testimonials, and consistent company ethos. These personalize the site and enhance user experience and are key details that AI might miss.

Top tip!

Manage the project's scope by creating a checklist of elements to ensure all components function correctly, use correct imagery, and include details like alt tags for accessibility. Though AI does much of the heavy lifting, human checks are crucial.

In less than an hour, you can achieve a presentable website. Of course, more comprehensive projects involving custom code can take weeks or months. However, for someone looking to quickly establish an online presence, this method is both efficient and effective.

Squarespace's AI builder is an excellent starting place for DIY enthusiasts. Its ability to quickly turn concepts into reality while leaving room for human creativity and input is unparalleled.

Whether you're building a small project or looking to scale up with professional help, Squarespace provides the tools needed to meet your goals. If you've used Squarespace AI, share your website link, I’d love to see your creations!
