Change the Section Background Color
To use a solid color background:
Go to the Color tab.
Pick a color from your site’s palette.
Adjust the overlay opacity to control how much of the color shows over other elements.
Tip: If you have an image set as the background, your color change may not be visible unless you remove the image or increase the overlay opacity.
Add an Image Background
In the Background tab, click the + icon under “Image”.
Choose one of these options:
Upload a file from your computer.
Select from your library of previously uploaded images.
Use Unsplash stock images (built into Squarespace).
Browse Squarespace’s stock backgrounds, including patterns and gradients.
You can also:
Inset the image to keep a border around it.
Apply effects like parallax scrolling for a dynamic feel.
Adjust opacity for lighter or darker tones.
Add a Video Background
Squarespace allows you to upload videos of up to one minute in length.
Just click + under “Video” in the Background tab and upload your file.
This can be a great way to add movement and energy to your page.
Use an Art Background
Squarespace also offers “Art” backgrounds, animated or patterned designs you can customize with different colors and settings.
Note: While these can be fun, they may not fit every brand’s style. Use them selectively for playful or creative projects.
Bonus: Search Stock Images Directly in Squarespace
If you need a background image and don’t have one ready, Squarespace integrates with Unsplash:
Click Add Image.
Search for keywords (e.g., “cityscape”, “abstract”).
Click Add Image to instantly set it as your section background.
All images from Unsplash are royalty-free, so you can use them on your site without worrying about licensing.
