How to Update Navigation Links in the Footer of your Squarespace Website
One of the most common issues Squarespace users run into, especially beginners, is assuming that the footer navigation automatically updates when new pages are added to the header menu. Unfortunately, Squarespace doesn’t sync the header and footer by default.
So if you add a new page to your site, your header might update instantly, but your footer will stay exactly the same until you manually edit it.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to update your Squarespace footer, add new pages to it, and ensure your site navigation remains consistent across all pages.
Why Your Squarespace Footer Doesn’t Update Automatically
While the header navigation is dynamically generated from your main navigation settings, the footer in Squarespace is treated more like a custom section. This means:
It does not auto-populate links
It does not sync with the header
It must be manually updated whenever you add, rename, or remove a page
Your footer is essentially just another editable section, usually containing simple text blocks, buttons, or layout elements you’ve added yourself.

How to Add a New Page to the Footer Navigation
Let’s walk through a real example. Imagine your header currently includes:
About
FAQs
Contact
Your footer mirrors this layout, but then you add a new page (let’s say Stores) to your main navigation. You notice the header updates instantly, but your footer still shows the old links.
Here’s how to fix it…
Step 1: Add Your New Page to the Main Navigation
Go to Pages in your Squarespace dashboard.
Under Main Navigation, click + to add a new page.
Name your page e.g. Stores.
Drag it into position between your existing pages.
Your header navigation will now show the new “Stores” link.
Step 2: Edit the Site Footer
Now it’s time to manually add that new page to the footer navigation.
Open any page on your site (the footer is global, so the page you choose doesn’t matter).
Hover over the footer area until you see Edit Site Footer.
Click it.
Inside your footer, you’ll usually see a Text Block that contains your navigation links.
Step 3: Add the New Link to Your Footer
Click inside the text block.
Find where the new link should go, for example, between FAQs and Contact.
Press Enter and type Stores.
Highlight the text and click the link icon.
Type / and select your new Stores page.
Match the text style (e.g. Paragraph 3 or whatever formatting your site uses).
Click Save.
Your footer navigation will now include the new page link.
Step 4: Test Your Navigation
Once saved:
Click Stores in your header to ensure it loads correctly.
Scroll down and click Stores in your footer to confirm the link works there too.
Your navigation is now consistent across the entire site.
Final Thoughts
Updating the footer in Squarespace is simple once you understand how it works. Since the footer doesn’t update automatically, just remember to manually adjust it each time you make a change to your main navigation.
