Guide: Change default site language on Squarespace

It would be pretty narrow minded of us as Squarespace designers to think that every client would want the default language of their website to be English.

Over the course of my career as a Squarespace designer I’ve built websites for clients of all nationalities including Swedish, French and Spanish. All of these clients wanted their website in their native language.

So how did I change the default site language for these clients? Read on to find out…

Within your Squarespace dashboard you need to navigate to Settings > Site Languages. Here you’ll be presented with two options, site languages and regional settings.

Within the site languages option you’ll see a drop down offering all of the languages that Squarespace offers. Click this and scroll through until you find the one you’re looking for.

By selecting a new language this will change aspects such as the spelling and autocorrect within text boxes.

You can also select the commerce settings option here to change the default currency if you want to change that too.

Did you know you can also make your Squarespace website multilingual? If you want to add other languages to your website you can use the Weglot plugin which presents users with a drop down, allowing them to select the language they want to access the website in. This is a useful tool if you operate internationally in multiple markets.

Back in your Site Languages dashboard you can also select the regional settings option. Here you can change your measurement settings, the country your website is based and your time zone.

Once you’re happy with your language and regional settings, just hit save and everything will be updated.

And that’s that. A quick and simple piece of admin that can be super useful for those working with international clients or audiences.
