How to A/B Test Pages on Squarespace

A/B testing (also known as split testing) is one of the most effective ways to improve your website’s performance. By testing two versions of a page, for example, one with a video hero section versus one with a static image, you can measure which performs better and make data-driven design decisions.

But here’s the catch: Squarespace doesn’t have a built-in A/B testing feature.

That doesn’t mean you’re stuck. In this guide, I’ll walk you through a simple workaround for running A/B tests in Squarespace, plus how to use analytics tools to measure the results.

Can You A/B Test in Squarespace?

Unlike platforms such as WordPress with plugins or dedicated CRO tools, Squarespace doesn’t allow true, automated split testing. However, you can still run manual A/B tests by:

  1. Duplicating your page

  2. Editing the duplicate with a variation (e.g., swapping a video for an image)

  3. Running one version live for a set time

  4. Switching to the second version and comparing analytics data

It’s not perfect, but it works, and it gives you valuable insights into what your visitors respond to.

Step 1: Duplicate Your Page

  • In your Squarespace dashboard, go to Pages.

  • Create a new Dropdown Folder in the Not Linked section to stay organised.

  • Drag your page (e.g. Homepage) into the dropdown.

  • Click the settings cog on the page > scroll down > click Duplicate Page.

  • Rename the duplicate (e.g. “Homepage B”).

  • Disable the duplicate page so it isn’t indexed by search engines until you’re ready to use it.

Step 2: Make Your Variation

Edit Homepage B with the change you want to test. For example:

  • Swap out a video for an image.

  • Change the headline in your hero section.

  • Test a different call-to-action button.

Save your changes. Now you have:

  • Homepage A (the original version)

  • Homepage B (the variation to test)

Step 3: Run the Test

Here’s how to run your A/B test manually:

  • Keep Homepage A live for a set period (e.g. 5 - 7 days).

  • Go to Analytics > Engagement and note performance data (page views, clicks, scroll depth, etc.).

  • Next, go back to Pages, enable Homepage B, and set it as your new homepage.

  • Rename Homepage A (so you can switch back later if needed).

  • Run Homepage B for the same amount of time.

  • Collect the same analytics data.

Step 4: Compare the Results

Now, compare the performance of Homepage A vs Homepage B. Key metrics include:

  • Page visits

  • Clicks on buttons/links

  • Bounce rate

  • Time on page

  • Scroll depth

Squarespace Analytics will give you a good overview, but for deeper insights, connect:

  • Google Analytics: for conversion tracking.

  • Microsoft Clarity:  for session recordings and heatmaps (see how users interact with the page).

Why A/B Testing Matters

Even small changes, like replacing a video with a static image, can impact:

  • How long visitors stay on your site

  • Whether they scroll through your content

  • How many people click your CTAs

By testing variations, you’ll discover what drives better engagement and conversions for your audience.

Final Thoughts

While Squarespace doesn’t support native A/B testing, this manual workaround is the next best thing. By duplicating your page, running each version for a set period, and using analytics to measure results, you can make smarter design decisions that improve your website’s performance.
